Electrician FAQs for San Angelo & the Concho Valley.

Straight answers to what Concho Valley homeowners and business owners ask us most. Still have a question? Ask us directly.

How much does an electrician cost in San Angelo, TX?

It depends on the job. A diagnostic and repair visit prices differently than a panel upgrade, a rewire, or a generator install. Our structure is consistent regardless: free estimate, written quote before work begins, no surprise charges. For larger projects the quote itemizes scope, materials, and permitting so you can compare it fairly against any other bid.

Why does San Angelo's housing age matter electrically?

Because electrical systems were sized for their era, and the eras have moved on. Much of San Angelo's stock — Santa Rita, the post-war neighborhoods, the older county towns — was wired for 60–100 amp services, two-wire ungrounded circuits, and loads a fraction of today's. The CPSC recommends professional inspection for homes 40 years and older; nationally, electrical distribution is the third leading cause of home structure fires (ESFI). Age isn't a verdict — it's a reason to look.

What's the deal with aluminum wiring?

Roughly two million U.S. homes were wired with aluminum branch circuits between the late 1960s and early 1970s — squarely in the window when much of San Angelo was built. CPSC-commissioned research found those connections are 55 times more likely to reach fire-hazard conditions than copper. Warning signs include warm faceplates, flickering, and burning smells at outlets. The recognized permanent fixes are copper rewiring or specialized crimp remediation at every connection — both jobs for licensed electricians.

Do I need a panel upgrade?

Ask three questions: How many amps is your service (60 and 100A panels predate modern loads)? Is it a fuse box or a problem-brand panel? And what are you running — central AC, electric kitchen, shop tools, an EV? If the answers stack up, a load calculation gives the real answer. We do that math as part of the free estimate, and we'll tell you honestly if your existing panel is actually fine.

Do you handle permits and inspections?

Yes. Significant electrical work — panel changes, service upgrades, new circuits — generally requires permitting and city or county inspection, and we fold that into the job. It's protection for you: a second set of qualified eyes confirming the work meets NEC code.

What are GFCI and AFCI outlets, and do I need them?

GFCIs cut power in a fraction of a second when current leaks to ground — required near water (kitchens, baths, exterior, garages). AFCIs detect the arcing faults that start more than 28,000 home fires a year and are especially recommended by the CPSC in homes over 40 years old. Many older San Angelo homes have neither; adding them is one of the highest-value safety upgrades per dollar in the trade.

Can you wire my shop, barn, or well pump?

Yes — that's daily work in the Concho Valley. Sub-panels and dedicated circuits for welders and compressors, barn and outbuilding wiring, and water-well pump circuits on rural properties. Done to code, sized to the actual equipment.

Do you install EV chargers?

Yes. A Level 2 home charger is a 240-volt circuit that needs a proper load calculation against your panel's capacity — especially in older homes where spare capacity is tight. We size it right, permit it, and install a charger that's safe at full draw for hours at a time.

Do you install standby generators?

Yes — whole-home standby generators with automatic transfer switches, and interlock setups for portable generators. The transfer switch is the non-negotiable part: it's what keeps backup power from back-feeding the grid and endangering line workers. Texans haven't forgotten why backup power matters.

What areas do you serve?

San Angelo and the surrounding Concho Valley — Grape Creek, Christoval, Wall, Miles, Mertzon, Ballinger, and more across Tom Green, Irion, and Runnels counties. If you're nearby, ask us.

Sources behind the claims on this page

Fire-risk, code, and safety figures cited above come from public, authoritative sources so you can verify them independently.

  1. Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) — home electrical fires account for an estimated 51,000 fires each year in the U.S., causing roughly 500 deaths, 1,400+ injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage; electrical distribution systems are the third leading cause of home structure fires.
  2. ESFI / NFPA — arcing faults are responsible for starting more than 28,000 home fires each year; the U.S. CPSC reports electrical receptacles are involved in about 5,300 fires annually.
  3. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Franklin Research Institute survey — homes built before 1972 and wired with aluminum branch circuits are 55 times more likely to have connections reach “Fire Hazard Conditions” than homes wired with copper. Roughly two million U.S. homes were wired with aluminum between the late 1960s and early 1970s.
  4. National Electrical Code (NEC / NFPA 70) — the U.S. standard for safe electrical design and installation, adopted across Texas; work on this site's projects is performed to NEC requirements by electricians licensed under the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
